Alexandre never learned to speak, the deformities of his mouth and jaw making it difficult for him to form words. But he wrote extremely well in French, German and English and was reported to have developed a haunting intelligence by an early age. To stave off the loneliness he developed a vast library of books, both fiction and non-fiction on nearly every conceivable topic and from a young age he took to collecting (and by some accounts, talking to) dolls.
